I’m a huge Chris Rock fan. I especially love some of his lines from Bring The Pain way back in 1996. In one segment he talks about how, once someone gets a G.E.D. people start telling them they should go to college. His response is basically…”slow down, it’s obvious that high school is busting my ass.”
If you have time, watch this clip to get the full effect. You won’t be sorry.
So what does any of this have to do with a new social media platform? First of all, it’s new to me. The platform of which I speak is called Learnist and has been called the “Pinterest of learning” by the media. They were named one of the 50 Best Websites by TIME magazine in 2012. Yes, two years ago, but since they have undergone a sort of transformation in defining who they are. Let’s sort out all the fun facts, shall we?
iTunes describes Learnist like this:
Learn how to film movies from Gus Van Sant, learn how to live in the wild from survival experts, learn how to make the perfect almond butter from foodies, or learn about geometry from a real teacher.
Why is iTunes talking about Learnist? Because they just relaunched the iPad app and it’s obviously a hot commodity right now. Get it while it’s hot people!
Who else is talking about Learnist? The Huff baby:
Basically, the site is composed of “Boards” (not unlike Pinterest) with different “Learnings” attached to them (much unlike Pinterest) allowing you to scroll though briefly or, stay a while and select different links associated with a learning, to glean even more information on the topic.
How many categories are there? Tons! Sixteen to be exact with everything from How To, Education, Products, Crafts, Entertainment, Games, Technology, Food & Drink, Travel and, of course Health & Fitness.
The Learnist Home Page highlights what’s new, essentials and recommended boards. Some of my favorites include:
There are also what they call “Premium” boards written by big shots like Ariana Huffington, Gus Van Sant and Olivia Wilde. These are real posts, written by the real people, exclusively for Learnist. No regurgitated info here. Do you want life advice from Ariana Huffington? It will cost you less then a dollar, which may end up saving you thousands in therapy bills. You’re welcome.
I’m proud to say I have my very first board up on How To Race Any Distance, and my profile page is good to go as well. Won’t you be my friend out there? As you can see from the screen shots, the Learnist peeps make it easy to share across all social media platforms, as well as follow others and add to your reading list. Voila!
So, are you ready to get your learn on?
[Tweet “Are you ready to #GetYourLearnOn? @learnisttweets “]
Yes, I’m being paid to post for Learnist. I can’t give all this out for free!
What would you like to see on this site?
Have you ever heard of it?
Would you pay for the premium reads?
I will have to check this out. My head is spinning from all the social media platforms that are out there for us to use. And for the record, there is nothing wrong with community college. I went to college in my 30’s and it was what I could afford at the time. I got my engineering drafting degree from there. I know that his skit was in good fun.
Absolutely Kris! I also took a bunch of classes (post grad) at a local community college and my step-son goes to one now so, it’s ALL GOOD!!! When I heard the name of the platform, the first thing that came to my mind was Chris Rock!
When I first saw your title, I thought, “no way, can’t add another platform!” But then upon reading up, it’ sounds totally cool. I’m thinking this might be perfect for a very loooong flight I’m staring down!
I felt the same way and then I was like “wait, I think I can handle this!” Have a great flight 🙂
Hmmm…okay, so when I sign up does that mean that I can add my content too? Is there any sort of review system if content is added? I’m going to check this outt as my weekend project. Looks interesting and might be faster to find what I’m looking for when I need help. It would be nice if there were subcatagories under the different areas.
YES you can add your own content and YES there is a review system prior to content being added. When you sign up and create your profile page, it will walk you though it. If you still have questions, let me know!!
Uh oh Allie, I have never heard about learnist but it’s a brilliant idea! I love learning new stuff and I’m really curious about the WiFi one and your article too! That Chris Rock film is one of the best comedy films ever made! I can wait to check it out and yes I would pay for the premium stuff!
I’m so glad! You will absolutely LOVE it. I know you will because I do and, let’s face it, we have the same impeccable taste 🙂 Have fun getting your learn on!!
More social media! This looks really cool. Definitely something I need to look into…especially your boards!
Just what you need, right?? I know, I know but I really think this is so manageable. There’s no big commitment being made, it’s just another great resource to add to your shelf 🙂
Even though I am being discerning about my social media lately, I am willing to check it out. I like a good way to curate content to share online and in my newsletter. Although, I don’t think I would pay for it. I can curate content in other ways for free. I would have to better understand what the value is.
Fair enough. Can’t wait to see if you use it and like it! LMK 🙂
Awesome! I have never heard of it! Glad I have though, I would love to be a part of it, that would be a great place for my Secrets to Success posts, I could put lots of running stuff on there 🙂 Thanks for letting me know about it, and I am not surprised they wanted you!
YES IT WOULD!!! You should absolutely reach out to them as you are just the kind of expert they need out there.
Oh i have actually never heard of this, but now I’m going to check it out. Though can I tell you part of my brain is like OMG nooooo not another platform 🙂 but I’ll get sucked in, I always do
I hear you!! I was like that at first and then, when I checked it out a bit more, it was so manageable and a great resource for me!
OK I need help…i found your board, it’s in my reading list… but can I not read it from my computer?? I can’t find a way to do that
Ignore me, I get it now…can I blame it on time of day?!
Hahaha – ok, then ignore me too. I just responded to your last two!!
Oh no??? That’s not right! I’ll see if I can find an answer…
Is it giving you an error message or just nothing??
I’d follow you anywhere, Allie, so I will check it out. But at this point my head will explode if I invest in another form of social media!
I hear you. It’s really great to just use as a resource when you need to find an answer more in-depth then Googling 🙂 Thanks Dana!
I pretend to be crafty and all that, so Pinterest kinda works for me, but THIS, I’m such an information and knowledge junkie, I can’t wait to join!
You are a woman after my own heart Jaclyn. I’m the same way!! Have fun out there…
I need to check it out! I haven’t heard of it, but I will be trying to load it on to my iPad later…right now I just need to get out of my bed and start thinking about going for a run.
Good first step Michelle. Just one thing at a time woman 🙂
I admit I have yet to check this out, but now you got me curious and will have to definitely take a better look and thank you so much for sharing with us today!!! 🙂
Glad I could pique your curiosity. You won’t be sorry…
Hey, what’s one more social media platform for a social media addict like me? Off to check it out!
Seriously Alison! Plus you have a ton of downtime right now, don’t you? hahaha
Will check it out today!! Cool!
So interesting… curious to check it out! I’m always googling how to questions… pretty creative idea!
I thought so too! Let me know what you think…
This is hilarious! I love it! I just set up an account. Still working out how to become your friend though! 🙂
Baby steps. I’ll go looking for you out there. Thanks Britt!!
Is it funny that most of us had the same reaction – another social media platform! haha. I haven’t heard of Learnist but it sounds really intriguing. I need to check it out!
I know, and I did as well but then, after I started reading and clicking…well, you know what happens!!
Oooh, I’ll be your friend there!
I feel overwhelmed.. and.. intrigued. I’d love to see/write photography, of course.
Thanks Tamara! Let me know what you think of the photography boards/learnings. I’m interested to get your expert opinion!
I have not heard of the site but it sounds really interesting.
It really is. I hope you check it out!
Hmmm, I’ve never heard of this. I’ll have to take a look. But I have to be honest, I’m afraid of having MORE social media outlets…I can barely keep up with the ones I have!
I hear you! But, it’s always good to have another resource, even if you don’t “join” you can always browse and maybe use some of the content?
I’ve never heard of this site but I just created an account so I could follow you:) Maybe soon I will actually try to figure out the entire site because it sounds super cool – love that you are sharing articles there!!
Thanks Kim!!! I appreciate it! You can create your own content as well. Maybe some of the stuff out there can help with your business?? However you use it, I hope you like it!!
I love your sense of humor. 🙂
And I’ve heard of this site, but didn’t sign up yet. I’m so afraid to join another platform and not be able to keep up.
I’m so glad 🙂
The beauty of this site is that there’s not really anything to “keep up” with. There’s no pressure to have followers and really, I use it more like a resource when I’m trying to find information. It’s like Pinterest in that way, but it’s more about really learning about specific topics. We actually need to create a “blogger” category!!! Imagine how much info we could put out there??
This sounds VERY cool. I love your page! This idea has wings for sure. And btw chris rock FTW!!!
Right on Charlotte! We are kindred spirits 🙂
Excuse me while I go immerse myself in Chris Rock and The Learnist. We need all the social media help we can get and honestly seeing Chris Rock live is on my life’s bucket list. He is SO FUNNY!!-Ashley
We need to meet at a show. I would LOVE to see him!!!
I miss being a student! This seems like a fun way to keep learning!
I miss it too! I love learning and taking classes and this is absolutely a great substitute (pun intended!).
