Don’t judge me. I’m judged harshly enough when I try to take some of the most ridiculous pictures for my Instagram feed, but I do it all for you! Ok, that’s a lie. I do it for the likes and follows and ‘badass’ comments and to look back and see how truly amazing and beautiful life is.
Today’s post is a link up with my Just Run girls and how we do it all for the Insta…and you can too!
First, to answer the burning questions you may have about Instagram:
- Yes, I feel like a moron setting up my camera and then running back and forth, looking at the timer, to get a good shot.
- Yes, I often think about what photo I’m going to take while I’m doing whatever activity I have planned for the day. I have the most running photos (even though I don’t hardly ever take my phone with me on a run) and the least swim photos because, you know, water.
- Yes, I sometimes feel like it’s incredibly vain, but I do it anyway.
Here are some of the hardest, most fun and surprisingly epic Insta shots I have taken and how they have come to be, in no particular order.
WHEN YOU RISK YOUR LIFE
Yep. I almost killed myself on the treadmill trying to get this shot. I was so pleased that I ran 9 miles on New Year’s Day, after being out past midnight on NYE that I forgot I was not as recovered as I thought. My first thought, as I stumbled for balance was “If I hurt myself trying to take an Insta pic, it would make a hilarious Insta post.” #issues
WHEN THE GYM CLASS COMES OUT ON THE TRACK
This has happened to me a few times. I’m right at the end of a tough track session when a gym class comes out onto the infield. This particular class was playing ultimate frisbee and the goals were set up on the edge of the track. I’m sure more then one of those bastards was aiming for me as I came around but I was determined to finish, even if it meant taking a frisbee to the head! I’m pretty sure they thought I was super lame and wondered why I was there. I left wondering the same.
WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK
My dog Star was crazy enough when I was standing up so I should have known better then to try an attempt a picture of me on the ground! As soon as I set up the shot, she went in for the kill. And, as Angela pointed out — “It’s always a butt in the face!”
WHEN YOU GOT NOTHIN’
I have no less than 700 pictures of my running shoes and my body from the waist down. It’s a runner thing and kind of cheat when you either have no good scenery, no way to take a good shot or you just want to post you went for a run because God forbid people think you’re not running today. The horror.
WHEN THINGS GO HORRIBLY WRONG
This happened just recently and was hilarious. The worst part was having to set it up all over again and pretend I really wasn’t taking a photo! Why?
Sometimes I think I’ll just ask people to take ridiculous photos of me running toward them or jumping in the air for seemingly no reason and see what happens. If nothing else, I’ll get a great photo for Insta!
Now that you know all my Insta secrets, here are more from my running friends. Hopefully they actually have some advice you can use!

Do you have any funny Insta pic stories? Please share.
I really need to keep saving my outtakes from Runfies but I don’t have enough storage for all that and the good ones. Is it bad that I’m getting immune to looking like an idiot even at the gym? Oh well.
I did a post on my IG fails a while ago–it might be time for another. There are plenty to go around! I enjoy trying to get the right photo and I”m not even embarrassed to ask people to take one for me. Sometimes people ask if I want them to take my picture, but the most interesting thing about this is that they NEVER turn out as good as my selfies. We all have different visions of what the picture should look like. I’m also stunned by what some people post on their IGs–I wonder if they even are looking at their pictures? It’s truly fascinating to me!
I feel the same when other people take my pictures, I’m usually disappointed but then what can you do? I definitely need to get over being embarrassed about setting up my shots and just own it!!
The struggle is real!!! Thought my struggle is usually more like standing on a chair or table to get a good shot of my food. LOL!
Is THAT how it’s done??? I have never, ever taken a good food shot. Now I’ll have to stand on a table or chair. My husband will love that! LOL!!!
this is hysterical! i have only made 1 or 2 real attempts at getting a cool running pic and when i did, something ridiculous happened so i guess i didn’t bother much.. but now you have inspired me. well let me heal my foot and then when i can run, i’ll artfully post of course. i’ll never forget putting my phone on a fire hydrant to take a pic of myself with my dogs and then a dog came to pee on the fire hydrant so i lost the pic due to running to save my phone from pee. bwahhahaha
OMG that may be the best story ever!!! LOL!!!
hahah omg I could NEVER get that set up the camera and run past just right!! LIKE NEVER. I need a instagram runner pics for dummies handbook. Your outtakes are fantastic!! Loved doing this with you as always!
Your outtakes crack me up! And it always is the butt to face with dogs! Ollie tries to sit on my shoulders and what he ends up doing is getting his butt in my face while I’m doing Pilates or something.
Haha, I love this post! I know exactly what you mean, because when I try to set up beach yoga photos, I feel like a complete schmuck. I’ll be trying to balance my phone against my bag, but not in the sand, and at just the right angle… and then there’s the whole timing thing… Sometimes trying to do a yoga pose within 10 seconds isn’t that easy! It’s all in good fun though.
I’ve only done a few yoga poses and there is definitely a reason for that!! Who knew I needed 20 seconds to get into dancer? HAHAHA – now I know 🙂
This is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh! I don’t do this enough and guess what you get? Shoe shots. Ha! xo
HAHAHA exactly! We all have too many of them so you’re in good company.
Hey,
Hahaha that struggle for getting the perfect picture is totally relatable.
It’s always been a great pleasure with like minded people. I too use instagram for fun, especially the stickers of stories, filters in reels.
