I’ve had a rough week. It’s been one of those weeks where I feel like everyone and everythingย was testing my patients. I’m even sick of myself. Yes, there were bright spots but I think the time change and darkness of winter is going to take a little adjusting. Join me as I make some adjustments, starting with my attitude…
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 3, 2014
RUNNING: Heading into the my weekend race I had run just nine miles. Nine. ย And that was over two days. What the what? I was not happy about it but my week was eaten up by work, more work, kids and more kids. You know what happens when it’s all work and no play, right? Right.
CYCLING: Is this the week I set up the bike trainer? Since last week was cold and rainy I’m thinking it’s the only option at this point.
SWIMMING: I never thought swimming would be my saving grace but it has been over this last week. I was able to get in my two pool workouts with minimal button pushing. Check!
CROSS-TRAINING: I went on a fitness field trip with a good athlete/mom friend of mine. This will definitely be a separate post, but here’s a little preview:
RACING: I did it. I ran the Stockade-a-thon 15K all by my lonesome self. And you know what? It was pretty great, except for the fact that I started getting sick the night before. You probably shouldn’t be taking Robutussin the morning of a race, right?ย You know I’m going to write an entire post on that one so…later this week maybe?
FUEL: I finally just signed up for a monthly supply of Picky Bars. I’m officially addicted to them and their tastiness, and I’m sick of running out of good bars at exactly the wrong time (button pusher!). Plus, I got a cool t-shirt. Lauren Fleshman, crafter of Picky Bars and fellow Oiselle bird, makes them hard to pass up!
THINGS I LOVE: My new Brooks (all-horrible-weather running) Adapt Jacket! Thanks to Jesica at rUNladylike who introduced me to it’s awesomeness, I got it on Tuesday last week and basically have worn it everyday since. What sold me on it? This:

I cannot believe no one else has come up with this combo before! It’s genius!!! If there’s a runner in your life, get them this jacket and they will love you forever!
THINGS I DON’T LOVE AS MUCH: Not being on a schedule. So many things threw me for a loop this week – training, the kids not having school on election day, sickness (pretty much everyone in the house!) and being away for the weekend. Things were overlooked and chaos ruled. I do not do well with chaos. I know I just need to relax more and try to take it in stride but, in order for me to doย all that I need to do, this house has to run like a well-oiled machine and last week was more like a rusted out El Camino.
MUSIC: Do you think other people’s buttons get pushed if I play this song in spin class? I have, and I try to read reactions but honestly everyone is sweating so much and working so hard that I’m not sure they even know there’s music on.
READING:ย The Rosie Projectย is pushing all the right buttons with me. Finally a book that I really love and can’t wait to read. I hope the ending is all that it should be.
RANDOM UPDATEย OF THE WEEK:ย Apple has been pushing my buttons lately. I wrote a post airing my grievances on Wednesday. My new phone shipped out on Saturday. Thank you Apple. We are friends again. xoxoxo
How was your week?
What (or who) pushes your buttons?
Don’t forget to learn something today:
That is a genius idea Allie! Its cute too! Did you win it? Jesica is awesome! I hate being out of schedule too, but thankfully today I think I can start setting one ๐ Hopefully things start clicking together a little more for you this week, look forward to the post with your friend ๐
Thanks Tina! Unfortunately, I paid full price for it, but worth every penny!! Good luck with your new job today ๐
We were pretty all sick here as well and Emma was still running a fever before bed last night. So don’t even ask about my schedule, which has pretty much been shot to hell. But yay for new phone and can’t wait to hear what you think of it soon ๐
That’s awful – so sorry to hear that! At least we all got sick one at a time…although I’m not sure that’s better??
Looking forward to the phone but now I have to shop for a new case ๐
I love that song too and I tend to put it on all the time when random people are around and I always get really surprised when people are offended or upset by it. But it’s SUCH A GOOD SONG and I’m not entirely sure I want to be friends with people it offends so…. maybe it acts like a filter?! Hehe ๐
Ha ha – YES! I love that! Although I’m not supposed to be ‘filtering’ in spin class – oops ๐
Sorry you had such a crazy week!! These random days off throw me off too!! And there is another one tomorrow. Goodness!! I already know how the race went but I am still waiting anxiously for the recap!! Can’t wait to hear about your field trip looks like fun from the picture!! And yes that jacket? Best invention ever! ๐
Thanks Nellie! Luckily my kids HAVE school tomorrow and are getting to listen to stories from veterans around our town. I’m so glad they’re keeping them in school AND giving them some real life experiences.
You should really think about getting that jacket now that you’ll be running through the NYC winter!!
I am out of sorts today as I am on day 6 of 10 days away from home. For me, if a song is fast or fun, it’s great for spinning.
Being away from home can definitely put things out of sort. I hope you’re doing something fun and can at least enjoy it a little!?
I agree about music choices for classes. It’s too hard to please everyone anyway!
Yes, but you crushed that race, right? Doesn’t that make up for a whole heck of a lot? ; )
I had one of those weeks last week, too. Kids were off both Mon and Tues, so by the time my birthday rolled around on Wed, I had to spend it working. Blech. AndโฆI haven’t’ run since last Tues. b/c of this hip. I see the doctor tomorrow.
Kudos to you for loving the swim these days. It is my second favorite activity, to be sure. Do you have a master’s group near you?
I love the looks of that jacket, but hope to never need it! Winter, stay away.
Yes and no about the race. I did have a great PR but I didn’t feel good most of the race, so was it really worth it? I like to really enjoy the race. I know you get it.
Working on your birthday is NOT ok.
Yes, we have a Master’s Team/Group at the Y but they meet at 6:30am during the week and there’s no way I can do that with the boy’s schedule. Booooooo.
You had better get the jacket… ๐
Some weeks can totally feel like that where everything is off and you just feel like everyone is getting in the way of you and you are getting in the way of yourself. Hopefully this will be a better week!
oh and I love that cool jacket, what a great idea and perfect for the chill that is settling over New England!
Even though I now have a head cold, this week is looking better and a lot less stressful!
The jacket is so great already, even without using the “extras” yet…only a matter of time.
Sounds like you had a stressful week! Hopefully this week will be better!
Super stressful, which is why I’m probably now sick. It’s a manageable cold, but still. At least I don’t have nearly as much on my plate this week! Hope you’re having a good one!!
I’m sorry your week was so stressful. I can only imagine I really like that Brooks jacket though…I had seen it before but never done my research to see what exactly it was. Thanks for sharing and I hope your week gets better!
Thanks Hollie! It’s better already and the jacket is keeping me nice and toasty ๐
I hope this week is free of button pushing, Allie. I’m glad you’re enjoying The Rosie Project so far. And I’m sorry if I pushed your buttons last week by telling you I already had my phone, but you’ll have yours soon! I hope you love it as much as I love mine.
Hahaha! Yes, that totally killed me. But, you know what? It arrived yesterday. Funny how that happened, right? And, it works like a dream. Now I just need a case…
I love that song so much!
I get totally thrown off when my schedule is disrupted, which I know is a very very bad thing now that I’m becoming a mom. Schedule? What schedule? Haha. But basically, I hear what you are saying. It is so frustrating when people don’t understand that one thing leads to a whole domino effect of other things. And it really makes me mad when I voice my frustration to my loved ones and their response is almost always “just don’t workout this week.” That is like saying “just don’t sleep this week.” Are you nuts!?
OMG yes! That is the worst!! My husband will say “do you REALLY need to workout?” to which I usually respond “Do you really need to breathe?” I mean, really? And, don’t be fooled about babies and schedules. You will probably have more of one when that little boy comes. You will do so well in that regard because you’re so organized. An organized mom is a happy one ๐
I am working SUPER hard not to let anything push my buttons these days. I feel like every week there is something I get flustered over so I am just choosing otherwise. I love to swim. It is so freeing for the mind.
I’m trying to “choose” not to be upset but I couldn’t take it last week. This week is already much better, despite my head cold. I can’t believe how much I’m loving my swims!! I think I just needed the change. Thanks Tara!
I need that jacket!! I wouldn’t need to have 10,000 layers when I’m slogging my miles this winter for marathon training. Genius Brooks!
I know!!! If you live and run in the Northeast – it’s a must have!
We all have off weeks. When you buff out that rust on the old El Camino it’ll be one of the most beautiful cars on the road. ๐
I would love the jacket. Not sure if my husband will appreciate the price tag. How to justify?
My hubs does love that song. I don’t like it so much.
Walmart pushed my button. I unsubscribed from all their emails over a week ago. I still get 3-5 a day. I used the contact form today telling them to cease and desist and listing the government regulations. It resulted in three emails regarding said contact form AND I’m still getting advertisements in my email from them even after that.
Hahaha – yes, you are right about the El Camino! I’m totally pimping that ride this week!
Walmart is the worst. I refuse to shop there at all. Good luck getting rid of them in your in box.
I hope this week is a much better week for you – no sickness, normal schedules and all-around happy people in your path every day!!!
Great race but bummer that you didn’t really feel great running – that takes away some of the fun of the race for sure.
You got it Kim. It’s no fun to be sniffling your way though a race. Luckily it wasn’t a half or I think I would have run out of gas.
This week is already much better!! Thanks!!
Ugh, sorry you’re sick and having a rough week, lady. I feel like this transition time into winter is tough. I saw Jesica’s post with that jacket and I was so tempted to buy it, but I don’t want to get a bigger size to accommodate bumpwatch… I bookmarked it for next winter, though, it would be the perfect commute layer. ๐
Hahaha – bumpwatch!! Love that. Someone needs to come up with an inexpensive line of women’s maternity athletic wear. I had a heck of a time finding a good lap swimming maternity suit when I was pregnant. Hmmmmm.
So, I’ve heard of Picky Bars but never tried them. In fact, I’ve never seen them in a store around here! I’m sorry you had a rough week, I totally get it. I’m pretty sure I feel like that every week too. Kids are tough! I’ve been hitting some new crosstraning activities this week that I’ve had a lot of fun with! BTW, thanks for the Skoop order. The protein powder is AWESOME to bake with!! It’s a plant protein so when mixed with water it doesn’t taste the BEST, but I mix mine with almond milk and love it. Next time definitely try the sweetgreans! But no pressure of course! Hope this week is better for you!
OMG I am a total moron!!! I meant to order the sweet greens. I guess I’ll have to place another one…oops!!
As for Picky Bars, I think you can only get them online. They are completely worth it.
I’m not trying to be creepy or weird, but look at you in that swimming suit! The backside and all the body muscles. hehe. You are seriously one fit momma. An inspiration to us all. ๐
Seriously thank you SO MUCH for saying that!!! You just made my whole day, week, month… :-)))))))
I’m definitely off to check out Picky Bars after I comment.
Yum Yucky’s comment made me laugh because I wanted to say the same but didn’t want to be creepy. And I don’t think Yum Yucky is creepy and I don’t think I am!
Sickness pushes my buttons. It’s the lingering stuff this time of year. We had ZERO sicknesses for all of spring and summer. Now with a family of four.. well.. you know.
You will love Picky Bars! I dare you not to!
And I absolutely love that you both think that about my picture and find zero creepiness factor. Anytime anyone wants to compliment my body (that I work oh so hard for!) will make my day. Especially since I hesitated before posting that one. You know how it’s all small on your phone and then BAM, you upload it and it’s huge? Well, probably not since you’re a real photographer and not a hack like me ๐
Hope you’re all feeling better! I guess I should be happy for the sick-less summer also.
Oh boy, I feel your pain. It has been a button pushing week for me too. I went for a 45 minute drive by myself just to get out of my house. Then I ran with a friend at the beginning of the week and her buttons were so pushed she started tearing up in the middle of the run. We decided to walk instead. Apparently it has been a mom button pushing week. Was it a full moon or something? And now I’m sick. The week just keeps getting better. NOT. On a bright note though, your stuff is shipping out today. ๐
Jeez – that is awful! I wish I could take a 45 minute drive to just stop all the noise!!
I’m so, so happy to hear my stuff has shipped. I think it’s going to be a cold weekend, so I will be ready. Thanks Michelle and, my cold only lasted a few days. I’m feeling so much better already. Hopefully you have the same bug!
WHOA! That coat is awesome!!!! Grrrrr….although it reminds me of winter and THAT pushes my buttons :)!
This week has been pretty low key as far as running goes….getting ready for Sat!!!!!!!!
I LOVE picky bars!!!!! I am tempted to eat them as fuel during my race.
Sometimes my kids push my buttons which is hard because I home school so on those days I just have to take a step back, take a breath and get through the day!
Breathing is key in all aspects!! You are my hero to home school. Good for you mama!
I’ll be cheering you from here on Saturday. You are so ready – all you have to do is execute your training and enjoy the ride. Best of luck!
Sorry for the shitty week, I hope things picked up after that!
They picked up quite nicely, thank you ๐
