I think I should start by saying that when I wrote about being wrong last week, it turns out I was actually RIGHT…aboutΒ oneΒ thing anyway. I’m not surprised, and you shouldn’t be either!
As you may recall, I said I was wrong about not wanting to wear a different brand of running shoes. I’ve run in Brooks for over 13 years, and they have served me well. However, when I had the opportunity to run the Reach the Beach relay, as part of the New Balance blogger team, that meant running in New Balance shoes. Which I thought was great. I thought they were doing my feet a world of good. Until I took off my nail polish and saw THIS:
My very first ever black toenail!!!!! I have never, ever, ever had a black toenail in all my years of running. So, is it a coincidence that I get the first one in 13 years after changing shoes? I think not. Dammit! *And sorry about the picture of my feet. I hope you’re not reading this while eating.
Now on to our regularly scheduled rundown:
RUNNING: Despite my now falling off toenail, I’ve kept up with my running as usual. I’m getting close to tapering for the half-marathon but this past week I had a great long run (11 miles at 7:34 pace) and a great track workout (4×1400 @ 6:20) with the boys!
Total mileage: 28
CYCLING: I have to admit, I had a few opportunities to ride outside but I chose to run. It’s just too close to the half- marathon for me to not get in myΒ core running workouts (distance. speed, etc.), and that doesn’t leave a lot of room for riding. I’m hoping to get in some outdoor cycling next week and the week after, when I’m tapering more for the race. I still have my two spin classes though, so I’m at least getting inΒ someΒ ride time!
Total mileage: 48
CROSS-TRAINING: I think I should take up dancing! I mean, I bought my first pair of leg warmers (from Sweaty Betty) since 1989, so what else should I do with them?
RACING:Β I’m so excited that my SIL and I are going to run the Stockade-a-thon 15K in New York again this year. We couldn’t do it last year, since my cousin was married in Boston, on that same weekend. You may recall the boys were in the wedding and Vaughn created a pee debacle in the church bathroom during the rehearsal!
FUEL: I had my first bite of an AMRAP bar, (I won a box from Flex of Lex!) and now I know why everyone is raving about them! I have the Honey Almond flavor, which is delicious, BUT I only ate half at a time since it’s a whopping 21 grams of fat and 320 calories. Unless I use it as a meal replacement, that’s a lot of fat and calories for one ‘snack.’ What’s in it? Not much, which is exactly how I like my barsΒ – –Β Almonds, Honey, Unsweetened Coconut, Egg-White Protein, Sesame Seeds, Cinnamon, Sea Salt. Try ’em, you’ll like ’em.
THINGS I LOVE: Making my first appointment with my new gynecologist! After my last horrible appointment with the one I’ve had for years, I decided to end it, and quickly. I spoke with the office manager and she wasΒ not surprisedΒ about my complaints and thoroughly apologized. Do you think I should bring that blog post to my first appointment with the new doc? I like to have full disclosure.
THINGS I DON’T LOVE AS MUCH: Having 80 degree weather on September 28th! I know I’ll miss it come February, but it kind of put a damper on our pumpkin and mum pick-up this weekend. This was the first Fall we wereΒ wearing tank tops to pick out gourds! Where are we? California? Plus, I didn’t get out for my run until 9:30 and it was H.O.T!
MUSIC:Β I fell in love with this mash-up the first time I heard it. Have you heard aboutΒ Cyndi Lauper and Sara Bareilles teaming up with True Colors and Brave? It’s freakin’ amazing and this video will make you cry, but it’s well worth it. You’ve been warned.
READING: I’ve read a lot of cool things on the inter webs lately, not the least of which was this postΒ by my good friend Erin Kreitz Shirey of Dig Deep Play Hard. She reminded me to LOOK UP and not dwell on what isn’t getting done, or what you should be doing, and instead to LOOK UP and enjoy the moment. Enjoy your family. Enjoy the little things. Thanks Erin! I’ve been looking up, and I love the view!
RANDOM THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: I love my new ring tone:
How was your week? Did you have any firsts?
What’s your ring tone?
That video just about did me in just now! Glad you had a great week and I love the leg warmers! It’s crazy how warm it’s been!
Doesn’t it just get you? I absolutely love the mash-up but the video puts me over the edge. At least I warned you π And yes, I’m loving the leg warmers!
Leg warmers? Love it! You know, black toenails are a runner’s rite of passage π I’m so thankful for nail polish!
Ha ha, I know. I guess I’m really late in my “passage.” Now I can call myself a true runner π
I totally don’t have a ring tone because I am #teamvibrate all day long but that one is pretty cool!! I’ll be honest. I loved the weather this weekend!! I wish I had a rooftop so I could have slept outside. It was awesome. Sorry about your toenail, from what I understand that’s a badge of honor?? π awesome about the race and yes I remember the pee debacle. I also remember how cute they were so that made up for it all!
Love that you’re #teamvibrate! I guess that’s what happens when you have a real job, right? I did enjoy the weather but I just love fall and I was getting used to those 60 degree days. I know there will be plenty so…
I absolutely love leg warmers and admit I live in the with knee high boots in the cold weather (at leaf I did last year with cute leggings, too). And the black toe, so sorry for that. Also, happy you quit your old OB-GYN and that you are trying a new one, because you definitely didn’t deserve that last treatment in my estimation at all. As for my ringtone, still You and Me by Lady Gaga and has been for over a year, but possibly should think of a new one. I will have to think about this now π
Glad I put you on the prowl for a new ring tone π And it’s been so warm that I haven’t been able to wear the leg warmers. I know I shouldn’t complain but I also love the knee high boots, jeans and sweaters. Bring on fall!
Oh no on the toe nail! I’ve never had a black toe nail. Knock on wood. Yuck! And You were meant to DANCE! Love the leg warmers!
Hahaha I’m glad you think so and THANK YOU for also saying you’ve never had a black toenail. I was mortified…and it’s getting worse. So gross.
Oh no! Sorry about your toenail….if you would have used Saucony you would have never had that problem π Just kidding, best to stick to what you know works! I am being tempted by the AMRAP bars too, need to hunt them down. I had a WONDERFUL weekend, after my saturday night event it absolutely FLEW by, but was so wonderful!!!!
You are cracking me up! Don’t worry, I’ll take ANY excuse I can get to buy new running gear – sneakers included! So glad you had a wonderful weekend. You certainly deserve it!
Yikes! Sorry about the toe :/ !
That was an awesome 11 miles!!!!!
I think your boys are destined for speed :)! (they also happen to be SO cute)!
Thanks so much Jen. It would be my dream come true if either of them got interested in running!!
Dying at the leg warmers picture! I think zumba is totally in your future. ; )
It was super hot here this weekend–so crazy! But I did enjoy it b/c I am a warm weather gal and love any excuse to stretch out shorts season. But I would like a few more of those mornings in the upper 40s for the perfect running weather.
Bummer on the toe nail!
NOOOOOO not Zumba!!! I only Zumba for Nellie and she knows it π
I’m enjoying the weather much more today – it was cool for my run and now the sun is out! It’s all about the running weather, right? hahaha
I’ve gotten MANY black toenails over the years. I’ve never attributed them to my shoes. That’s not to say it’s not my shoes, but I think I have gotten them in just about every brand I’ve owned. I usually find I get them when I run races where there are long downhills and my foot shifts forward, or when I run longer than usual. And I just read Tina’s comment and I am laughing because I totally have gotten them in Saucony shoes too…which is what I am wearing right now. Don’t tell my beloved Nikes.
Love the leg warmers? Will you be taking up Zumba? I would totally make a spectacle of myself there. LOL.
I definitely think some runners get black toenails and some don’t. I’m in the “don’t” camp so it’s just gotta be the shoes, since nothing else has changed. Very weird though, since the shoes felt fine when I was running in them.
There will be NO Zumba for me! I only Zumba for Nellie π
Thanks Michelle and your secret is safe with me…
I know I commented on FB but I had to lyk just how cute you look in the leg warmers and how adorable your boys are.
In terms of my week, I actually wasn’t up all night writing blog posts so that’s a first for me!
Thanks Melissa! And I LOVE that you named your dog Griffin.
SO happy to hear you’re actually sleeping. At least, that’s what I hope you’re doing instead of writing blog posts.
Yes, keep looking UP! LOVE that that resonated with you, thank you for sharing. YOU slay me with your Rundowns. I always love them and yes…..bring the blog with you to the OB appt. You have this one body and the lady parts need to be comfortable and taken care of with class. π xoxox
Hahahaha!!! Thanks so much Erin. I truly loved that post because I sometimes feel the same way when I have company coming. Why is it that the first thing we think of is all the things that aren’t going to get done?? And then, I’m always sad when they leave and I want more time. Now, at least I have a reminder to forget about all the little things and LOOK UP!
I’ve never lost a toenail either.
Hope you like your new DR!!!
And, that ringtone would get on my last nerve after about the 3rd time:)
It’s funny about the ringtone because you would think it’s over-the-top annoying, but I just think it’s hilarious. Maybe it’s because my kids can’t call me yet so I know it’s not them π
That is an amazing mash up and video – thank you so much for sharing. My ringtone is Dancing Queen – makes me groove every time it plays. Yours would make me want to poke my eyes out π
I’m so glad you liked the music and the video. I just fell in love with it!
Absolutely LOVE that you have dancing queen as your ringtone. That is SO YOU!
Kim said the same thing about mine, but I think it’s because my kids can’t call me yet π
I was totally eating while seeing photos of your feet! Luckily feet don’t gross me out and it was chocolate and caramel, and nothing could have stopped it.
I LOVE “True Colors”. I’m watching it now while both cats lick themselves on my monitor.
Ok, maybe I’m not hungry anymore.
OMG that is too funny!!! You should have just eaten another piece of chocolate and caramel goodness π
I. Love. Those. Leg Warmers. I am so tempted to buy some right now. I can’t believe you hadn’t ever had a black toenail before!! I had that problem with Saucony Kinvara – I LOVED the way they felt while running, but it was black toenails and blisters after anything over 10 miles. So weird, because I felt no discomfort while running. Very, very happy to hear about the new doc.
Oh and I’m #teamsilent.
The SAME thing happened with the New Balance – no pain or discomfort at all. Very weird.
You should totally buy the leg warmers. They are beyond cozy and a must in the city in the winter!
Oof, sorry about your toenail (and I was eating, an ice cream, if you really must know – gosh I feel so guilty telling you that).
How cute are you in the leg warmers!
There is zero guilt! You’ve been through so much in the last few months that you’re allowed all the ice cream you want. For now, at least π I’m loving the leg warmers.
Hi, yeah, that video, um, hello, where are my Kleenex. We will definitely be sharing that one on the old blog (full credit to you for turning us on to it, of course!). And my children adore doing the “mom, mom, mom” routine to me! LOVE your leg warmers…they are awesome! :)-Ashley
It’s funny because when I saw it, I was kinda surprised that I didn’t see it on your blog first, since I see so many great ones there! I found “Try” (by Colbie Caillat) though you ladies and I absolutely LOVE that song. I played it for my spin class cool down today…plus, it makes me think of my Dose Girls! π
Glad you got that doctor situation sorted out! That was definitely necessary. And yeah it was SO hot this past weekend- i showed up somewhere completely sweating through my shirt- it was not my most charming moment, in fact i had to take it off and borrow a shirt. #classy. And YES to taking up dance!! that is always a yes π
You are one classy lady! That is too funny and at least you were able to change!! π
Totally agree with you on the AMRAP bars, to eat the entire thing it needs to be a meal replacement, but I can deal with 1/2 for a snack! Glad you like them!
I still would have liked to have won another box from you π Now that I only eat half at a time though, it should last more then a week!
I LOVE your new leg warmers! You should totally take up dancing! π
21g of fat!? I am really surprised given the ingredients and agree with you that its too much for a snack.
I did have a first this past week. The first time I tried non-alcoholic wine. Let me tell you, there is a reason there is alcohol in wine!
OMG I can’t even imagine the non-alcoholic wine!!! That is too funny. When I was first pregnant with the boys, I tried to drink non-caffinated coffee. GROSS!!! I went back to one cup a day real fast.
WOW! This will teach you to never abandon Brooks ever again π xo
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! I totally laughed out loud at this! I did get what I deserve, didn’t I? I’m sorry Brooks!!!! I’ll never cheat on you again!
